The main purpose of HTML tables is to provide a convenient way to control your page layout.  Basically, they provide structure for your page.  Without tables, anything that you place on the page is restricted to right, left or center alignment depending on what the page is set to, just like in a word processor.  In other words, if there is no table set up on your page, you can t just pick a spot on the page to place things.  Tables provide an easy way to place things exactly where you want them.

For example: if you place two images side by side without using a table, the one on the right will slip under the one on the left if you resize your browser window. The solutions is to create a table with one row and  two columns, and place each image in adjacent table cells. The images will now remain in place, side by side, no matter what size your browser window is.
